A very poor start to this game saw numerous handling errors
and a total lack of cohesion in the Broadland side. From the outset Witham
attacked and Broadland found it hard going to keep them at bay.
Pinning them in their own half, Witham maintained constant
pressure on the home side but they could not penetrate the stout defence
and they could not put any points on the board.
After ten minutes, an attack into the Broadland twenty-two
saw a wayward pass intercepted by the Broadland fullback who sprinted
a full seventy metres to score a try under the posts. Easily converted
Broadland were 7 - 0 up and totally against the run of play.
This was the catalyst that Broadland needed and from then
on the remainder of the first half was totally one-way. A powerful Witham
defence managed to hold Broadland for a lot of the time and following
a further try apiece (Jarnisch) the half-time score was 12 - 5.
With the wind behind them, Witham started the second-half
stronger pushing Broadland straight back into their own half. Fifteen
minutes gone they were awarded a penalty which they slotted between the
posts to bring the score to 12 - 8. With the pressure on, it was looking
increasingly likely that a try would soon follow.
With fifteen minutes to go a sideways kick near the halfway
line went straight to the Broadland winger, O'Connor. Beating two defenders
he scored the try that sealed Witham's fate.
A rejuvenated Broadland maintained pressure from the restart
and gained a lineout in the away side's twenty-two. As secure as ever,
the ball was taken by Durrant, he fed to scrum-half Clarke who, with a
neat dummy, went through two defenders and set up the ruck ten metres
from the Witham line. Quick ball from Andy Smith to the Broadland Captain,
Lee Durrant , saw prop Khan Bilyard outside him; a quick pass and, with
just one defender to beat, an easy shrug-off gave Broadland their final
try. Final score 24 - 8.
