  Broadland 1st XV 87 v 0 Felixstowe - 8th February 2003

Broadland again strengthen their lead in Eastern Counties Three, with an astonishing display of open field play as the Great Yarmouth side put 12 tries past a spirited Felixstowe side.

Broadland began to make ground into Felixstowe territory from the kick off. Centre Mark White created some space for Scrum Half Rob Burling to open the scoring for Broadland with a quick side-step and sprint to the goal line (converted Murray).

Felixstowe responded and pushed Broadland deep inside their half, but a turnover ended up in the hands of Hooker Elliot Benham who raced out of the Broadland 22-meter line. A combination of quick passes down the sideline between Pollard, Morrison, Ruddick and White set Fullback Murray free to score under the posts (converted Murray)

Felixstowe were still trying to reorganise when Scrum Half Burling took a quick line out to Morrison. Prescott and Mackintosh cleared and Hooker Benham bounced off two tackles to add Broadland's third score (converted Murray).

The situation did not improve for the visitors from the subsequent kick-off: Number 8 Ian Mackintosh took the return from deep and crossed over the half way line. Benham then collected a short pass and made his way into Felixstowe territory and then off-loaded the ball in the tackle to Flanker Asa Morrison who went the remaining 30 yards untouched to score under the posts (converted Murray).

Although Felixstowe were competing hard in the scrum, Broadland's pack worked their way down to Felixstowe's 5-meter line with some sterling work from Props Browne and Taylor. The twenty-one stone Captain Andy Riches came close to a score as did his second row partner Jimmy Grey (or is that Murray?) but it was Scrum Half Burling who finally snatched the opportunity and went over for his second score (converted Murray)

Broadland again pinned Felixstowe deep inside their 22. Flanker Jay Prescott almost caught the Felixstowe Fly Half behind the line but a wayward kick went hurtling up field. With an excellent take of the bouncing ball, Wing Glen Patterson beat his opposite man in the air and side-stepped the Fullback to dive over for another Broadland score.

An injury to second row Grey saw Neil Blizzard join the pack. Felixstowe then enjoyed a short period of attack. Prop Ross Taylor put in a solid tackle to which the ball was neatly cleared by Fly Half Ruddick. Broadland moved steadily down field and it was more good work from Ruddick and Centre Mark White who created an opportunity for Inside Centre Mark LaCock to crash through and score (converted Murray)

Broadland were now in complete control and Felixstowe were struggling to link play together. Broadland then had a second injury in the pack, this time it was Ross Taylor. Teenager Richard Bristo (Shrek) then came on at loose head. Broadland were again pressing hard and Burling again took the opportunity and sped through a gap in the Felixstowe line to score his third of the day.

Time was beginning to expire in the first half and a poor clearance kick provided the platform for another score. The kick failed to make touch and was fielded by Wing Jay Pollard who immediately headed across the field stretching the Felixstowe defence line. Some good work from White and LaCock created some space for Patterson, who side-stepped and passed to Fullback Murray on the outside, Murray then cut across and scored under the post (converted Murray)

In the dying seconds of the first half, Murray added a further penalty before half time to put the score at 66-0.

Broadland stayed on form in the second half and Hooker Benham was on the score sheet again after he took a quick pass from Burling to cut through the Felixstowe line to score his second (converted Murray)

Broadland made their final substitution of the day when Justin Miller came on at Scrum half for Burling. Broadland's open running rugby was again finding gaps in the visitors defence almost at will: Number 8 Mackintosh made a break at the half, put in a long pass to Morrison who cut across the field to switch the ball back to Fly Half Ruddick, who sprinted the last 20 meters to Score. (Converted Murray)

Broadland again thwarted a Felixstowe advance and some solid tackling from Bristo and Scrum Half Miller, prevented a score. Broadland's twelfth and final try again started deep inside there own half. Steve Browne took the ball in the tight to set a platform, Riches and Blizzard both picked up and moved down field, Millar then put in a long pass to Prescott who went 30 yards down the wing. Prescott then held the ball up in the tackle to pop to Pollard, who finally set Murray free to score his third and Broadland's final try of the game.

Murray then lined up to take his thirteenth successful kick of the day, and an individual point tally of 42.

Broadland recorded certainly their most convincing league win in recent years, and have scored 24 tries in the last two league fixtures.

Next week Broadland 1st XV visit Harwich & Dovercourt in a re-arranged fixture following the recent snow and the 2nd XV visit Fakenham in a friendly.
