  Sawston 1st XV 5 v Broadland 1st XV 12 - 14th December 2002

Broadland made the long away trip to Cambridgeshire side, Sawston. Broadland and Sawston have both enjoyed a good run in the league recently and Broadland knew it would be another tough fixture. Broadland's 1st XV squad was bolstered with Mark White, Steve Brown and Rye Billyard all returning from injury.

The game began with neither side stamping authority on the fixture, some hard hitting tackling from Wings Raven and Pollard prevented Sawston from breaking outside. The Broadland pack was allowing nothing through the middle but were not able to offer any decent attacking play either. Centre Glen Patterson had a couple of good breaks through the middle but Broadland failed to make much territory inside Sawston's 22-meter Line.

Sawston maintained a long period of attack but Broadland held firm. Finally the deadlock was Broken when Number 8 Mark Cammock made a break for the Sawston line. He beat two Sawston Players and was in the process of being gang tackled as he went over the line. To be sure of the score he passed the ball laterally to Flanker Morrison who touched down and put Broadland on the score sheet (unconverted).

Broadland entered the second half with the upper hand but had still failed to play the sort of rugby they have been playing in recent weeks. The half could not have started worse for Broadland when Sawston made some good territory and were awarded a penalty. Sawston charged the Broadland line, which had been spread too thinly, and scored to tie the game. (unconverted).

Sawston maintained pressure and Broadland brought on Bristo and Billyard to add some fresh legs in the pack. A fantastic 60-yard run from Scrum-half Burling put Broadland inside Sawston's 22-meter line. Broadland were awarded a penalty and Center Patterson took it quickly to crash through a trio of would be Sawston tacklers to score (converted Murray).

Another Broadland substitution saw Mark White join the Broadland three-quarters. Shortly after, outside half Ruddick was adjudged to have made an infringement during a ruck and was subsequently sin-binned. Broadland then faced their hardest spell of the game. With five minutes remaining, Sawston threw everything at Broadland, who responded with some bone-shaking tackling notably from Bristo, Bilyard and White. Broadland saw out the remaining time in their own half and the final whistle meant Broadland have now moved four points clear at the top of Eastern Counties Three.

Broadland 1st XV are away next week to Swaffham in the Norfolk Plate and the Tigers are at home to Holt III XV
