   Cambridge Development XV 40 v 21 Broadland 1st XV - 27th March 2004

Broadland travelled to play Cambridge's Development side in an extremely fast paced friendly fixture. The Cambridge side were a selection of the Clubs Under 21s and a side with plenty of skill and pace compared to the experience and strength of the Broadland side.

In the backs it was recalls to the first team line up for Wing Jack Lovett, Centre Kyle Rogers and Scrum Half Jago Jones-Rogers in the pack Khan Billyard came in at tight head prop.

Broadland kicked off and immediately Cambridge tried to use their pace. A run of solid defensive work kept the home side at bay but finally an overlap saw the Cambridge wing score the first points of the day with a converted try.

Broadland were dominating the Scrum and the combination of Beckett, Smith and Billyard were securing excellent ball. Centres Rogers and White were also making inroads into the Cambridge defensive line. However, Cambridge stretched their lead with a second converted try, leaving Broadland trailing by fourteen.

Broadland fought back from the kick off and a kick-through by Number 8 Rye Bilyard was caught by Fly Half Simon Ruddick inside the Cambridge five-meter line. Broadland rucked and the ball was passed down the line from Riches to Morrison and finally Lovett. With the ball virtually at the goal line Scott, Smith and Beckett joined the Maul. It was Prop Matt Beckett who was able to gain possession and touch the ball down (converted Murray).

Broadland followed this attacking flurry with two neatly taken penalties from Full Back Stuart Murray to leave the half time score at 14 - 13 in Cambridge's favour.

The second half kicked off and Broadland found themselves in excellent field position following some excellent running from Durrant and Riches. Broadland were awarded a penalty taken by Murray to give Broadland a two point lead.

Their lead wasn't to last when the Cambridge Full Back exploited a gap to score from the half-way line for a converted try. Cambridge extended their lead shortly after with two further penalty kicks.

The Broadland ruck and maul was proving virtually impossible for Cambridge to contend with and the Broadland forwards, with Captain Riches leading by example, moved their way down inside the Cambridge 22-meter line.

A half break from Flanker Jay Prescott got within a meter of the goal line; Morrison cleared over with a quick ruck and Scrum Half Jago Jones-Rogers was on hand to pick up and score in the corner (unconverted).

With time running out, Broadland needed a score to win the game and the Yarmouth side threw everything forward. Following some excellent play from Beckett and Ruddick Broadland were deep inside Cambridge territory when a commendable counter attack yielded the home side a further score (unconverted).

Broadland again went onto the offensive only to see Cambridge, for the second time in as many minutes, stretch the lead and complete the afternoons play with a second try from a counter attack followed by a conversion.

Broadland Second XV also travelled to Cambridge to play their 4th XV unfortunately, due to late call off, were only able to field thirteen players and despite a spirited fight from the Tigers they went down 47 - 0.

Next week Broadland are at home for their last league game of the season when they play host to Lakenham Hewitt.
