   Wisbech 1st XV 77 v 10 Broadland 1st XV - 13th March 2004

Broadland were given an insight into the standard of play they will need to attain in order to gain promotion from Eastern Counties Two. A victory at Wisbech could have given the Yarmouth side a third place finish, however with only one league game left Broadland look almost certain to finish in a respectable fourth place.

Broadland had four changes to last week with Wing Lee Raven and Scrum Half Russell Clarke joining the backs; in the forwards Hooker Khan Billyard joined the front row and Paul Abel came in at Flanker.

Wisbech scored early with an excellent maul, a converted score under the posts by the Fly Half. Broadland responded following some excellent pressure from Jack Lovett and the ball went loose for Wing Matt Scott to collect and cover thirty yards to score in the corner (unconverted).

Shortly afterwards, Broadland Full Back Stuart Murray saw a penalty attempt just go wide of the posts. Wisbech struck back with a try down the wing (unconverted) Broadland were competing well in the Lineout with Abel and Morrison disrupting the Wisbech ball and Ruddick and Durrant were making good ground in the middle of the park. An injury to wing Raven saw Jonny Clay called into action.

After 25 minutes the Wisbech backs play began to make in-roads into the Broadland defence, this was enhanced by the excellent support play from the Wisbech forwards and a run of tries saw Wisbech stretch the lead to 29 - 5 at the halftime.

Broadland made one change at half time with Andy Smith coming on as Hooker. Broadland made some early territorial advantage through some excellent mauling play from Prescott and Grey. However it was not long before Wisbech again began to assault the Broadland line.

To their credit Broadland really made Wisbech work for every inch. Props Matt Beckett and Ross Taylor were putting in some solid tackling but the score line began to drift higher and higher. Broadland did however get a score back when a quickly taken penalty saw Scrum Half Russell Clarke spin the ball out to Captain Andy Riches who powered through two tackles and over for the score (unconverted). Broadland made their final substitution with Prop Graham Thompson joining the pack. Wisbech completed the afternoons play with a couple of tries and secured at least a second place league finish and promotion.

Next week Broadland look to an away fixture against Holt in the Semi Final of Woodfords Norfolk Plate.
