Broadland 1st XV 26 v 10 Harwich & Dovercourt 1stXV - 27th September 2003 |

Broadland's League season started perfectly with a win over Harwich and Dovercourt last weekend. Broadland needed to make an early impression in this league and a win will certainly make other sides take notice of the Great Yarmouth newcomers in Eastern Counties Two. After an early spell of territorial kicking Broadland were first on the board with a neatly taken penalty kick from full back Murray. Harwich immediately replied with their own penalty to tie the scores. Broadland began to probe the visitor's lines and Matt Scott came incredibly close to an early score for Broadland. The home side certainly had the lions share of the play and following some uncompromising work from Broadland's' front row of Beckett, Smith and Bristo, Murray added another penalty to the Broadland tally. Harwich had a couple of good runs at the Broadland lines, but stern defensive work on the fringes from flankers Morrison and Prescott prevented them capitalising on the gains. Broadland furthered the lead again with a penalty from Murray and entered the half, with a 9 - 3 lead. At the start of the second half, Harwich supplied all the pressure but without reward as the Broadland line held firm. Lee Raven and Mark White both had some good counter runs, but it was wing Matt Scott that scored the first try of the game with a chip-and-chase (converted Murray). Broadland then made their first substitution of the day with Ross Taylor adding some fresh legs up front in the pack. Broadland began to find gaps in the Harwich defence with Gray and Durrant having some good runs in the tight play and Mark LaCock in devastating form. With the Yarmouth side closing in on the Harwich line, Burling and Ruddick were beginning to orchestrate some fine work around the Harwich 22. It was Matt Scott who clinically cut through to extend Broadlands lead with his second score of the day (converted Murray). Broadland now had a comfortable lead and Captain Andy Riches brought club veterans Mickey Pywell and Phil Crane into the match. Broadland began to consolidate their play and Murray added Broadlands' last points of the game with a mint of a penalty. Harwich rallied late and to their credit scored in the last two minutes (converted) but it was far too little too late. Broadland now look forward to another league fixture as they visit Norwich Union next week. Broadland 2nd XV play host to Lakenham 3rd XV (KO 3.00 pm) Tries: M.Scott (2) Conversions: S.
