Broadland made the return to league rugby with a real cliff-hanger of a Game and a win by the closest of margins against a very competent Newmarket side. It was a return to the starting line up for Wing Lee Raven and in the forwards there were three changes with Lee Durrant, Khan Billyard and Richard Bristo all joining the pack. Broadland kicked off and Newmarket began to apply the pressure in the tight, with their bigger pack. Broadland responded with some good running from LaCock and White in the midfield. Newmarket took an early lead with a well struck penalty following a lengthy period of defensive play from the home side. Broadland capitalised on their first full attacking foray into Newmarket territory, with a scrum awarded on the Newmarket five-meter. Broadland put the shove into the scrum and the Broadland front three of Becket, Billyard and Bristo managed to move the ball in close. Scrum Half Burling stepped in and spun the ball to Fly Half Simon Ruddick who took the ball at pace and with a side step and shimmy was over the line for a score (converted Murray). Shortly before halftime Newmarket struck back with a penalty to put the game within one point. Broadland Captain Andy Riches made one change at half time when he brought on Prop Ross Taylor. The second half kicked off and both teams were intent on getting within kicking range. Abel and Durrant were both consistent in the line out and Wings Raven and Scott both put in some testing runs. The back row of Prescott, Abel and Morrison were applying plenty of pressure on the Newmarket Halfbacks, but neither side got really close. Broadland Scrum Half Burling had a decent break from the back of a scrum and Full Back Murray put in a long range drop goal attempt. Broadland used the last two substitutes with Jim Grey coming in at second row and Wing Johnny Clay joining the backs. The final ten minutes were played with solid tackles from both sides, and neither side managed to get close enough for a score, the whistle sounded and Broadland recorded another home win.
