   Newmarket 36 v 13 Broadland 1st XV - 25th Ocotber 2003

Broadland travelled to play Newmarket in what was the two clubs first ever league meeting. Broadland made a number of changes, with the emphasis leaning towards experience, rather than the considerably more youthful side that had beaten UEA the week before.

Broadland kicked off and had an abrupt awakening as the Newmarket side mauled and rucked their way over for a converted try. The Yarmouth side was still trying to find its balance when again Newmarket came thundering over the visitors line for a second converted try when the Broadland defence found itself spread too wide to provide comprehensive cover. The visitors were struggling to piece together co-ordinated play and disaster stuck again as Newmarket went over for the third time for an unconverted try.

After a mere ten minutes Broadland were 19-0 down and had barely crept inside Newmarket's half. Broadland began to settle and fullback Murray was unfortunate not to add three points when his first penalty attempt of the day went wide.

Newmarket kept pushing at the Broadland line, but this time the visitors tackling held firm. Broadland drove down field with some good running from Ruddick and White in the midfield and Murray put Broadland on the score sheet with a penalty.

Newmarket then finished the half, with a penalty of their own. With the score at 22 - 3 Broadland certainly had a lot of work to do in the second half.

Early in the half Murray added his second score of the day to pull Broadland closer. The Broadland scrum and Lineout were providing a solid platform for Scrum Half Burling; finally an excellent break from wing Matt Scott put Broadland near the Newmarket line. A miscommunication between two Newmarket players saw the ball roll lose behind the goalline and Matt Beckett dove through to touchdown (converted Murray).

Broadland pulled back to within nine points and began to exert some pressure on Newmarket. Captain Riches made his first substitutions with Bristo coming on at Prop and Pollard coming into the centres.

Broadland probed the home sides 22 but failed to exploit the gaps and it was Newmarket who put the game virtually beyond Broadland reach with a try from a set play from the Broadland five-meter line (converted).

Broadland made their final substitution of the afternoon with Neil Blizzard joining the second row. Despite some good work around the park Broadland failed to really penetrate the Newmarket line and Newmarket secured the win with a converted try in the last five minutes.

Next week Broadland travel to Swaffham for a friendly
