   Broadland 1st XV 31 v 12 University of East Anglia 1st XV - 18th October 2003

Broadland secured a convincing win in the first round of the Norfolk Junior Cup against a quick and mobile UEA side. Captain Andy Riches and Coach Mark Frost had taken the opportunity to rest a number of players and with no less than eleven changes; a very different team was fielded to the previous week.

The changes we a blend of youth and experience with veterans Mackintosh, Blizzard, Pywell and Hargreaves joining the pack along with young guns Bristo and Brewster. In the backs Clarke and Jones added the experience at Scrum Half and Fullback, Perhaps the most interesting factor in the line up, was the entirely teenage three-quarters of Raven, Rogers, Lovett and Clay.

Broadland kicked off and, with a knock on, were awarded a scrum. The Broadland pack exerted their authority by immediately sending the visitors scrum back five yards; with the scrum reset the Broadland front three of Bristo, Pywell and Browne again disrupted the UEA platform with a phenomenal display of power.

Broadland may have had the edge in the tight but it was very evenly matched in the Backs.

Broadland were first on the score sheet with a well worked move between Half Backs Simon Ruddick and Russell Clarke from the base of the scrum, culminating in Number 8 Mackintosh breaking through to score under the posts (converted). UEA were quick to retaliate and a break down the right wing saw the University side level the score with a converted try.

Broadland forwards were beginning to stamp their authority on the game and Andy Hargreaves and Neil Blizzard were making some good ground in the tight. Broadland found themselves in excellent field position with a scrum at the UEA five-meter line. Mackintosh picked up and off loaded to Wing Lee Raven who dived over for the score (converted).

Despite Broadland's dominance in the pack UEA were still establishing gaps to exploit and a well worked UEA score put the visitors within two points with an unconverted try.

Broadland made their first substitution of the day when Matt Beckett came on for the injured Richard Bristo. Broadland extended their lead towards the end of the first half when Jack Lovett dove over following a beautifully timed pass from Kyle Rogers and some excellent work from forwards Brewster and Browne (unconverted).

The second half got under way with more good work in the pack and some consistent lineout play. Broadland began to make changes with Kevan Pywell joining the back row and Jay Pollard joining the backs. Broadland again endured the consequences of an over-familiar relationship with the sin bin, when Lee Raven and Kevan Pywell were given the yellow card within two minutes of each other. Down to thirteen men the stretched Great Yarmouth side dug in and with Pollard's first touch of the game he grasped the opportunity to score and extend Broadlands lead (converted) amid the stunned faces of fifteen UEA players.

Broadland were soon back to full strength and UEA had missed the opportunity to capitalise on a two-man advantage. Broadland made their last substitution of the day with veteran David Beagrie joining the pack. Broadland closed the scoring on the day with a forward try: Second Row Morrison drove the ball down close to the UEA goal-line, the Pywell Brothers drove over and Dave Beagrie was on hand to touchdown (unconverted)

Broadland finished with a good performance and proceed to the next round of the Norfolk Junior cup. On Saturday Broadland are away to Newmarket in the league, and will certainly be looking at a more disciplined approach, with the referee reaching into his pocket six times in the last three weeks, Broadland have certainly learnt about the new uses of the yellow cards the hard way.
