   Brighlingsea 1st XV 8 v 3 Broadland 1st XV - 19th Febuary 2005

Broadland were back in league action as they travelled away to play Brightlingsea. Broadland had defeated the Essex side comfortably back in October, however the return fixture did not fair Broadland's way, as the Yarmouth side failed to turn superior territorial advantage into points.

Broadland had a number of changes in the pack; Rye Bilyard returned at Number 8, Veteran Paul Abel joined the pack at open side flanker. There were also two changes in the front row with Khan Bilyard starting at Hooker and Richard Bristo coming in at Tight head prop. Broadland kicked off and applied early pressure in the tight, with Captain Andy Riches and Second Row Tim Fenn leading through some excellent mauling play, however Broadland were unable to cross the line and Brightlingsea cleared.

Broadland again moved in to scoring range and some good work at the front of the Lineout saw Flanker Asa Morrison and Hooker Khan Bilyard combine well, to drive inside the five, however again the Home side held firm against the Broadland attack and cleared, Full Back Murray had a Drop Goal attempt go wide, and wings Matt Scott and Lee Raven had some probing runs.

Broadland were reduced to fourteen as Number 8 Rye Bilyard was yellow carded and sent to the sin bin for ten minutes, but still Broadland kept the territorial advantage, largely due to some excellent tackling from Flanker Paul Abel and fly half Simon Ruddick. The Broadland pack dominated the scrums and won a couple against the head, while in the line out despite a strong cross wind Bilyard was connecting well with Fenn. Broadland despite a vast territorial advantage in the second half were unable to convert this to points and at half time the match remained scoreless.

Early in the second half Broadland strung together a forty yard rolling maul, and when a penalty was awarding inside the 22 meter line Captain Riches elected to go for Goal. Full Back Murray stepped up and neatly added the first points of the afternoon. Broadland still had the bulk of the attacking play and Centres Mark White and Mark La-Cock were making some decent yards in midfield. Murray had a second penalty go wide following an excellent run from Scrum Half Justin Millar. Brightlingsea worked their way steadily into Broadland's half and a lineout ten meter outside the Broadland Goal line culminated in an Unconverted Try for the Home side.

Broadland Captain Riches made two Changes with Kyle Rogers joining the wing and Lee Durrant coming on at Second Row. Broadland began running at every opportunity, but were struggling to progress from their own half. Broadland then made their final substitution with a first team debut for Teenage Forward Sam French who came on at open side flanker. Broadland were still trying to run the ball from deep but an error gave Brightlingsea a penalty, which was taken cleanly extending their lead to 8-3. To Broadland's credit they were still trying to break the stout Brightlingsea line from deep inside their own half, however time soon expired and the Yarmouth side were left to reflect upon a match which could have been comfortably won by half time.
