Fakenham Veterans v Broadland Veterans - 14th January 2001

In the first minutes of an exciting game, Broadland Vets found themselves trailing to a quick-to-gel Fakenham side who ran in two quick tries

The first came after some good pressure from the outset when, with a quick kick over the opposition defence when in the Broadland 22, the home side touched down after two uncharacteristic defensive errors. The second, however, was a well worked try which began with a maul ten metres outside the Broadland 22. When Fakenham had gained fifteen-to-twenty metres Broadland managed to halt the maul only to see the ball fed out to the backs and an easy run in for the winger. Ten minutes gone and ten points down, the two teams looked in very different classes at this point.

After that, the visitors started to play together and managed to, at first, hold the home side and then to force them back onto the defensive. With some excellent play by the Broadland forwards they managed to start to take control over long periods of the game, gaining valuable ground and providing some good, quick ball for the backs. Unfortunately, they were unable to put any points on the board and the half finished at 10 - 0 but with Broadland looking by far the better side at the turnaround.

The second half began much as the first had finished with Broadland's first points coming from a well-worked move in the Fakenham 22, the visitors were awarded a penalty following handling in the ruck from which the Hooker, Morris (Junior, well on the park that day), scored Broadland's first try. With the conversion attempt by Pyewell being thwarted by the crossbar the score stood at 10 - 5.

After some good rugby with both sides scoring tries - the home team first followed by the visitors, who converted theirs - the scores now stood at 15 - 12. As time wore on both sides were looking tired and worn and it was only a matter of time before one of the sides scored. Fakenham were the next to cross the try line with another unconverted try but, even though they had a nine point lead, with seven or eight minutes remaining on the clock, Broadland were still in with a chance.

However, today was Fakenham's day and from an intercepted pass just outside their own 22, the Fakenham substitute, with the freshest legs on the park, ran in their fifth (unconverted) try of the match to give the home side a 25 - 12 victory and an end to an enjoyable game to watch.
