Gents Dinner - 24th April 2004

Broadland Rugby Club Celebrated their first season in Eastern Counties Two with a Gentleman’s Dinner at the Kensington Hotel, Great Yarmouth. The guest speaker was former England International and three times Grand Slam winning Hooker Brian Moore.

Broadland, who have now attained their highest ever finish in the English Club Championship - finishing in fourth place in Eastern Counties Two - certainly consolidated their arrival at a new level following promotion last season and answered their critics on being able to compete at a higher standard.

Club Honorary Life Member Andy Ruddick and Brian Moore were on hand to present a number of awards to members of the club. It was a great day for the clubs Forwards as four of the five playing awards went to Back-row players.

  • Asa Morrison received the Broadland 1st XV Players Player of the Year. Versatile Morrison led thefForwards in scoring and has been a main-stay of the Broadland pack since moving to the area in early 1997.

  • Broadland 2nd XV Players Player of the Year was Kyle Rogers. Teenager Rogers had an outstanding season in the Seconds and began to break into the First XV towards the end of the season.

  • First Team Captain Andy Riches presented the Captains Player of the year to Open Side Flanker Jay Prescott.

  • Second Team Captain Russell Clarke presented his Captains Player of the year to Forward Neil Brewster.

  • Wing Sammy Jordan, who only recently had his first appearance at first team level was awarded Most Promising Player.

  • Jim Grey was awarded the Clubman of the year for revolutionising the role of equipment officer (as well as playing in the 1st XV second row).

On a special note Ian McCreadie was awarded Honorary life membership to the club, an honour only bestowed upon a precious few. Sue Watson, long-standing Secretary and Treasurer was presented with a spectacular bouquet in thanks of her tireless support of the club.

England International Moore ensured an entertaining evening as he recalled his own experiences as a player with England and the British and Irish Lions, as well as reflecting upon the achievement of England winning the World Cup.
