Sponsored Row
On Sunday, 24th January 1999, Russ Clarke, David Joseph, Ted Lawler, Iain Mackintosh, Andy, Simon & Stuart Ruddick, Andy Smith, and Diana & Stephen Wood, completed a one-day, indoor rowing challenge, covering 100,000 metres (equivalent to travelling to Cromer and back) in a creditable 6 hours,14 minutes and 15 seconds, placing the Club 13th fastest in the UK.

Not bad for a crew comprising 4 pygmies, one woman, one young man (Stuart turned 16 a week or so before the event), one hippie (Andy had his hip replaced just over a year ago), and a Steggasaurus – 2 of the crew being indescribable.

The event, intended to promote the club, whilst raising money for the A & E Department at the James Paget Hospital, was kindly hosted by Focus DIY/Petworld, and the final sum raised is expected to exceed £400.

The rowing was performed on a Concept II Indoor rower, similar to the one in our own gym, and for those interested in how they measure up, the finish time represents an average pace, per 500 metres, of around 1 minute 52 seconds, each person completing 20 x 500m reps.

Our thanks go to the following for making the event possible:

  • Focus DIY/Petworld
  • Absolute Sports Apparel
  • Juler Sports
  • Williment Engineering
  • Marine Equipment Supply
  • Russ Clarke NSA
  • Diana Wood
  • Elaine Allan
  • Tosh & Acle High

and also all those who took the time and trouble to visit during the day to cheer us on.

From a medical point of view, for those of you who wish to participate in the future, rowing appears to be a good cure for constipation:
