LineOut September - December 2000

The management wish to extend their apologies for the unwelcome absence of the Lineout from your reading rooms for so long.  As some of you may recognise the preparation of this regular and, in my view, essential vehicle for club communication is time consuming and challenging.  Perhaps this is why we have not been able to persuade anyone to take on the role permanently.  To this end I am undertaking a guest editor slot for this edition.  It is hoped the regular two monthly publishing schedule will be resumed – so if you can help for one or more newsletters please contact the club committee.

Thank you to ‘disgusted’ of Great Yarmouth who writes to say:

“To this day it continues to amaze the youth organisers of Broadland RFC that local people still do not know there is a rugby club in Great Yarmouth.”

Sadly disgusted we are only too aware that people are not fully aware of our presence (except when certain members are out at night!)  So everybody- please spread the word.  Let your friends, neighbours, schoolmates and teachers know a great time can be had in Cobholm that is healthy, fun and legal.

Youth News

A flourishing group of 6-10 year olds meet at the Cobholm ground each Sunday at 10am.  So far this year there has been contact with 30 children.  The demand to ensure ever-improving participation and supervision in small groups means more help is urgently needed.  You do not need to be an expert, since David and Gary are there to lead the session, but if you can spare 2 hours one Sunday per month (or more if you wish) please speak to David, Gary or Simon.  Support to gain the appropriate qualification will be available.  Additional assistance in manning the sweet counter might make someone’s life all the sweeter.

U12's

A fixture list has been arranged for all ages up to 12 years.  The first fixture was the Under 12 vs. Lakenham and Hewitt.

12 boys and girls represented Broadland RFC, acquitting themselves and the club well.  In truth they were a credit to themselves, their families and their coaches.  It was especially warming to see so many smiling faces before, during and after the games.  Post match statistics are somewhat vague and lost in the euphoria of the day.  It is believed the match was drawn 6 tries each.

Forthcoming fixtures:

- 19 November vs. Beccles  Away. All ages up to 12.

- 17 December vs. Lakenham and Hewitt  Away  U12

U15's

The U15 squad is developing and again all the boys appear to enjoy the games and the training.  As always even more lads and adults turning out would only have positive benefit.  Additional help at training is urgently needed to further aid development

Results

- Away to Fakenham - won 10-14.

- Away to L&Y - lost 31-5.

- Away to L&Y - won 5-15.

More fixtures to follow...

Thus far this age group has been using the 3rd team kit.  In truth this has not presented the club in the best of lights especially when compared with that of the U13 team, which was provided with help from the Tudor and Hunt Engineering. (For this the youth and we are grateful.  It looks splendid)

It would be nice to raise sufficient money to purchase a proper kit for the boys whose enthusiasm deserves this commitment.  Yet as always it is difficult to raise the £700 necessary.  Are you a parent or other interested party?  Can you help by co-ordinating fund raising ideas?  Does your company support such community ventures and are they willing to see their name and logo on the team kit?  If you can help in any way please speak to Andy either on Sunday mornings at Cobholm or on 781229.

Science Update

Scientists have recently announced astonishing new findings concerning beer in Britain.  Researchers have identified female hormones in Anglian Ale!  A sample 100 male volunteers were tested and after 12 pints of beer 100% gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became emotional and could not drive a car!

Subscriptions

As always some subscriptions are late.  Please pay quickly.  Not only does this maintain financial solvency but ensures that you players are insured by the RFU organised scheme.  We would remind you, though, that if you require sickness cover on a regular basis for non-permanent injuries you must organise this yourself.  Why not give Mark a call at Home Mortgages Search.  The number is in the fixture card.

Thoughts From The Chairman

Well here it is at last - the latest edition of ‘The Line-out’ and my first musings as Chairman.

Since the last editor retired it's been difficult finding someone to take on the job of producing what is a vital part of the communication within the Club.  This edition is only possible because Andy Ruddick has managed to find a bit of spare time to get it all together. If there's anybody out there who is interested in taking it on please let me know.

Without some form of newsletter it is very hard for people to know what is going on and who's doing what.  As an example, apart from the few members present at the AGM how many of you knew that, due to a well planned operation from certain people, who shall remain nameless, I got voted in as chairman?  How many of you know who the Club President is or the Equipment Officer? Perhaps to most of you the Committee is something remote and you don't know or care what goes on behind the scenes but without those people who put in the time to do these things the Club would not exist.  If anyone has any thoughts or ideas on the running of the Club they are welcome to attend meetings or talk to me or any of the other Committee members.

As Chairman for this year I see the Club as having two main objectives:

1. On the field to gain promotion in the Eastern Counties League, and

2. Off the field to make the Club better known in the town.

Results for the 1st team have improved and if the present winning streak can be maintained there is every possibility that the first objective can be attained.  If anyone has any ideas on the second please let me know.

That's enough from me for now, if any of you have read this far, well done you can look forward to more of my musings/rambles in the next edition - if there is one.

Graham Clarke

Quote of the Week

“I have not spoken to my wife in a month.  It’s not that we’ve fallen out…I just don’t want to interrupt her!”

“English law prohibits a man from marrying his mother in law.  This is a perfect example of totally unnecessary legislation.”

"Anon to protect the guilty.  So girls how about hearing from you now?"

CAP’Ns CORNER

When I went for this captain lark, nobody told me that it would actually involve me getting’ off my backside and organising things!….…(You haven’t noticed the difference, I hear you saying).  However, here we are two months and thirty 1st XV players into the ‘new’ season.

We started the season a little complacent I reckon, feeling that we were unlucky to have been in Eastern Counties 3 to begin with and that the teams there should hold no fear for us. Well, as anyone who has played league rugby will tell you, it’s not gonna be as easy as we thought!!

Two defeats at Haverhill and Stowmarket have left us in fourth place with the necessity of winning every remaining match to give ourselves a chance of promotion (I kid you not!)

Every player who has played in the 1sts this season will also tell you that the atmosphere is one of recognition of the above factors, so that we don’t have to play the local derby against Swaffham next year.

One thing that I have been keen to see develop, is the Broadland style of rugby. Historically we have always been a good rucking team, with mobile forwards. With the way that the game of rugby is changing its not so much the winning of the ball that is all-important, as what you do with it and how quickly that you do it.

In training we are attempting to get players proficient at operating at this increased pace and taking the ball on WITH MOMENTUM to the next phase. This idea of ‘always going forward’ seems to be obvious, but I often hear Si Ruddick shouting at people to get in motion. I firmly believe that the only thing that separates us as a club from those of a higher level is the ability to automatically react to the situation and not to be told. It goes without saying (although I’m gonna say it) that attendance and dedication at training is the only way that we will achieve this.

With league rugby becoming more demanding the need for ‘squad’ rugby is apparent and Graham Thompson and myself often discuss who could step into the squad, based not only on their ability on Saturday but their willingness on Wednesdays. So, if you fancy stuffing Haverhill and Stowmarket next time round – let’s see you this winter!

On a lighter note, there’s been a suggestion of a club ‘p*#s up’ in December, I reckon Saturday 2nd looks good, Bad Manners are at Tiffany’s – even Khan should get in! Let me know what you think.

Cheers

Lee

……….oh yeah, watch out for that dyke!!

Graham Thompson, Tigers Captain, writes:

Firstly thank you to everyone who voted to allow me to captain the Tigers.  I hope I can do the job as well as previous captains.

This season has seen the new merit table for Norfolk.  The team has not had as good a start as we all would like, but there a signs that it is coming together.  I know the team is working to overcome any problems but I cannot stress enough the need for every player to attend training – not just for personal fitness but the constructive drills, which can then be put into the game on Saturday.  This can only be done to full effect if you have practised them to the fullest.

Attendance at the next team building event is mandatory.  The night out is scheduled for December 2nd.  Please check for details of where to meet.

Tommo’s Tips

1.  Always remember Slimfast is great with chips!

2.  If your kids are playing too near the fire hang a picture of the front row on the mantelpiece to scare them away!
