Any sort of 'printable' news, jokes, announcements, etc., will be most welcome. You should contact Sue Watson on Gt Yarmouth 657052 or e-mail on sue@broadlandrfc.org.uk with any items you wish to publish.

Training

Members attending training were very thin on the ground thin on the ground at the start but since letters of encouragement were sent out numbers have improved BUT we could still do with a few more faces on a regular basis as the season draws near. Training takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm at the moment and will soon revert to Wednesdays at 7pm.

Chairman's Bit

Here we are again the summer break is nearly over, training is in full swing and the season gets under way in 2 or 3 weeks depending on when you are reading this.

Hopes for the new season are much the same as every year - promotion in the Eastern Counties League for the 1st Team, the same in the Norfolk League for the Tigers.

Last season saw mixed fortunes, the first team put together a good spell of results but unfortunately not enough to gain promotion, the Tigers were champions but, because of a reorganisation of the League, are still in the same division this season!

Off the field the good news is that the Clubhouse floor has finally been done and hopefully by now redecoration is under way, the Gentleman's Dinner went well and an enjoyable evening was had by most who were there, the Tour apparently went well although as I had to miss it this year I am relying on other people's accounts - it would be good if someone who went could do a Tour story for the next Lineout.

Sue Watson has taken on the job of publishing the Lineout for the time being, if anyone has any funny stories, jokes or anything else they would like included in the next issue send them in to Sue.

To finish this time I'd just like to say good luck to both teams in the coming season and thanks to Frosty and Simon for coaching and everyone else who has put in the effort to get along to training.

I should also apologise for the fact that, due to a technical hitch, the incentive scheme is not yet properly under way.

Gorleston Raft Race

On a hot and sunny Gorleston beach the Club's team managed a creditable second place in the DIY event in this year's raft race, they should really have won the event but for the chivalrous (and some would say stupid) act of helping a ladies team to build and dismantle their raft. The ladies rather ungratefully went on to beat the Broadland time by 30 seconds to win the event!

The Broadland team consisted of all veteran members namely Kev Pywell, Andy Ford, Sumo and Graham Clarke as the crew, ably assisted by the technical expertise of John Miller and Gibbo who helped with the building and launching of the raft.

Expert advice was also provided by our President Ian Macreadie who, seeing the fine athletic figures of the team and recognising them instantly as rugby players, came across to pass on his experience of taking part in raft races.

The team had the benefit of taking part in the third round so could watch the efforts of the other teams and see where they went wrong.

When it came to our turn the raft was built, launched and was halfway to the marker buoy before any one else was in the water!

The total time taken was 15 minutes 50 seconds beating the nearest rivals by 6 minutes.

Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, this time was narrowly beaten in the last heat putting us in second place.

This was the first time the Club has taken part in the competition and Pug already has plans for next year, there is no limit on the number of teams that can be entered so next time if we start planning earlier we can hope to put more teams.

Pug also has ideas for introducing beach rugby and inviting international teams to take part!

Insurance

All playing members are insured under the RFU death and total disability policy BUT you should look into getting a private accident and sickness policy. Any of the insurance agents in the club will be pleased to advise.

Tetanus

Each playing member should make sure that their tetanus injection is up to date. East Anglia is a very vulnerable area.

ClubHouse Refurbishment

By the time the season starts the clubhouse will have been completely decorated. May we thank our President, Ian McCreadie for his sponsorship with the men and materials. All members, please take care of the room - it looks great!

Youth

The youth section is being particularly promoted this year and again thanks to Ian McCreadie for sponsoring a new kit for the boys. We had a very successful inaugural Youth presentation dinner during the summer with all the boys receiving an award of some kind. Simon Ruddick, Steve Browne and Mal Wheadon are organising the youth games and training this year. There is a training day for youth on 30th August at the ground, organised by Tosh with the support of the Yarmouth Mercury.
