| This draw meant that Wales had now played nine
matches without a win against England. Even worse, they had still
to win at Twickenham, where England had now run up eight victories
and a draw. Welsh newspaper accounts made much of a Don Burland
conversion.
Both touch-judges deemed the kick had missed but at half-time
the referee, Dr Wheeler. confirmed he had decided otherwise by
informing officials of the fact and ordering that the scoreboard
be altered.
Goals from a mark were rare events, even in the 1930s. Wick Powell's
may have been unique: he decided to take it as a placed kick,
rather than drop-kicking it which would have been usual. In the
event, England players did not charge, as they were entitled to
do, which suggests they had been sufficiently confused by Powell's
action to have decided that he had been awarded a penalty kick.
