| With victories over Scotland and
Ireland in the bag, France faced Wales in an unprecedented position
of being able to win the Championship.
The proximity of the prize dictated France's game, which was
punctuated with brutal fist and boot exchanges the like of which
had rarely been seen in the Championship.
One Welsh player, Hubert Day, needed nine stitches after being
punched in the mouth. On another occasion, Cyril Rutherford, the
highly respected secretary of the French Rugby Federation, ran
on to the field to point out to the referee, D. Helliwell, that
a French player had provoked an incident which led to a Welsh
player retaliating with his fist.
French officials were so upset by this and other incidents that
they formally reprimanded several players; and one of their forwards
was told he would never play internationally again. In the event,
nine of the French team were not chosen again.
