| It was not the first time that Ireland
had the prize of the Triple Crown snatched from them by Wales,
who showed vastly improved form after losing to England and Scotland.
No one was more disappointed than George Stephenson, Ireland's
captain and the Championship's most capped player, who was making
his fortieth and final appearance.
First capped in 1920, against France, Stephenson had played in
an Ireland side which had finished bottom of the table four seasons
in a row (1920-23) and had then become a prominent figure in their
rise to challenge the title during the next seven seasons. But
the luck was against the Irish, and Stephenson.and Ireland did
not once win the Championship or the Triple Crown.
