| Ireland-Wales matches were always bruising affairs
and there were other vital factors which made this match more
fiercely contested than most: Wales stood to win the Championship
and Ireland were bidding for the Triple Crown.
Both sides suffered injuries, but Ireland were further handicapped
when Crowe went off in the second half with concussion. It meant
the end of an era for several distinguished Irish players: Joe
Arigho, Mark Sugden, Jimmy Farrell and Jammie Clinch.
These players were the heart and soul of Irish rugby at the time,
although none of them ever played in a side which won the Championship
or the Triple Crown.
