| Watcyn Thomas played for much of the
game with a broken collar-bone and his bravery was rewarded when
the Llanelli forward scored a try.
An earlier example of such devotion to duty was in 1900 when Dick
Hellings continued to play with a broken arm against England at
Gloucester and the Llwynypia forward also scored a try.
Before the match there was a minute's silence in respect of the
memory of James Aikman Smith, who had died while on his way to Cardiff.
Aikman Smith was one of the most remarkable administrators in the
history of the game: an implacable opponent of professionalism,
a meticulously careful treasurer of the Scottish RFU and a vociferous
voice on the International Board; he represented Scottish interests
for 44 years.
