Broadland U-15’s 31 v 15 Beccles U-15’s - 21st March 2004

On a windy day Broadland were entertaining Beccles. They got off to a good start when they pressurised Beccles causing several knock-ons but they failed to score.

Several minutes later due to some slick passing, Centre Brice Crane strolled over for a try (unconverted.) Beccles applied some pressure but a superb blindside move from a scrum in their own 22 allowed Number Eight Daniel Shuckford to sprint up three quarters of the pitch and offload to Crane for his second (converted Phillips.)

Beccles were struggling against Broadlands' pace and power; this showed when Crane ran from his own try-line all the way down the touch line to score (unconverted): this left Beccles shocked.

They responded well with continuous pressure in the Broadland 22 which led to a try when they stretched the Broadland line from a penalty to dive over in the corner (unconverted). Broadland were, however, comfortably in the lead at half-time.

Beccles had come with only twelve so Broadland made some subs and took back the two players they had lent them from the first half and gave them three new men: Coach Andy Hargreaves was grateful for the kindness of the players to go on the other team.

In the second half, Broadland played with a level of complacency and let the Beccles forwards get control of them after Broadlands' first half domination. This was highlighted when Beccles drove over the line from a maul (unconverted).

Broadland had only themselves to blame and had to make up for their mistakes. They spread the ball wide and wingers Sewell and Adcock made some probing runs into the Beccles defence. Their break came when Shuckford found a gap and dodged a tackle to run under the posts (converted).

Beccles responded quickly and camped in the Broadland half. Eventually they were given an unconverted score that angered Broadland, and one which they were determined to reply. They did just that when they got a penalty two metres out from the Beccles line and substitute flanker Craig spun round a tackle to score (converted).

This was the end of the match and Broadland were pleased with the result. They have a tournament against Beccles and Swaffham next week at the Cobholm playing fields and would like as much support as this week so they can get the boost they need.
